Tucked beneath the bustle of Sydney’s CBD, The Gidley channels an art deco elegance behind its discreet entrance, escaping guests into the golden era of opulence and indulgence. Part of the Liquid & Larder group, this steak house takes us into New york in the 1920's, where intimate supper clubs and speakeasies defined the era.
The moody interiors are layered with dark timber panelling, plush banquettes, and gently curved alcoves - details that recall the secrecy and sophistication of the early Art Deco era. Brass brushed wall light fittings with exposed Edison bulbs cast a golden glow that gently bounces off wooden surfaces, velvet, and glass.
There is an interplay between dark timber tones and warm amber light working together to cultivate an intimate, cinematic quality of an atmosphere. When we dissect the lighting choices we can see that The Gidley chose brass picture wall lights to illuminate artworks that add to the subtle glow of the room.
Brass wall lights such as our Huberman wall light (pictured above) are very much in the industrial vintage style with strong hints to early 20th century. The filament-style Edison bulb is a hallmark of late 19th to early 20th century lighting, widely associated with the 1920s–1930s revival trend. It emphasises the beauty of the bulb itself rather than concealing it.
Candles on the tables are an effective way to add to the layering, making each table feels like its own private stage, encouraging conscientious fine dining indulgence paired with slow unhurried conversation - just as they did in the golden days of 1920s Manhattan.
